Coron Bay is world-renowned as one of the premier wreck diving destinations on the planet. On September 24, 1944, a surprise aerial attack by the US Navy's Task Force 38 sank a fleet of Japanese supply ships hiding among the limestone islands. Today, these vessels have been transformed by nature into vibrant artificial reefs, encrusted with soft corals and teeming with marine life. From the shallow Lusong Gunboat, visible even to snorkelers, to the massive 160-meter Okikawa Maru and the hauntingly deep Irako, Coron offers a unique underwater museum where history and nature merge. Whether you are a first-time snorkeler or a technical diver, exploring these underwater time capsules is a bucket-list experience unique to Palawan.

Real experiences from real travelers
The Reefs and Wrecks tour was incredible. We aren't scuba divers, but snorkeling at Lusong Gunboat was mind-blowing. The wreck is so shallow you can almost touch it. Lunch on Pass Island was delicious too.
Dived the Akitsushima and Okikawa Maru. The dive guides were very professional and safety-conscious. Visibility was about 15m. The sites can get crowded, so I recommend a private boat if you can afford it.
Visiting these ships was a solemn and beautiful experience. The coral growth is amazing after 80 years. The 'Skeleton Wreck' is very popular for a reason - thousands of fish!
We did the shared tour ($63 USD) and it was worth every cent. The guides were funny and helpful. The coral garden stop was actually better than the Great Barrier Reef in some spots!
As an advanced diver, the Irako was the highlight. Penetration swim-throughs were tight but well-guided. Boat was a bit slow but the crew was fantastic.
The colors of the coral on the gunboat are unreal. Even just snorkeling, you see so much. The water is warm and clear. Highly recommend bringing a GoPro.
We went right after a storm so visibility wasn't great (maybe 5m). Still cool to see the wrecks, but check the weather first. The crew did their best to find clear water.
I've been to Coron three times and this tour never gets old. The guides are very knowledgeable about the history of the 1944 airstrike. Please respect the marine life and don't touch the corals!
Everything you need to know for your journey
No, several wrecks like the Lusong Gunboat and Skeleton Wreck are very shallow (starting at 3-5 meters) and are perfect for snorkelers. However, for the deeper wrecks like Irako or Akitsushima, you need Open Water or Advanced certification.
The dry season from November to May offers the calmest seas and best visibility (up to 20m). The rainy season (June-October) can have lower visibility but fewer crowds.
The wrecks range from very shallow (3m at Lusong Gunboat) to deep technical dives (43m at the bottom of Irako). Most recreational dives are between 12m and 30m.
Penetration (entering the wreck) is allowed only for certified divers with a guide. Simple swim-throughs may be possible for Open Water divers, but deep penetration requires Advanced or Wreck Specialty certification.
You may see White Tip or Black Tip reef sharks, which are generally harmless to humans. They are not guaranteed but are a lucky sighting!
Water temperature is a comfortable tropical 27°C to 30°C (80°F-86°F) year-round. A 3mm shorty wetsuit is usually sufficient.
Snorkeling gear (mask/snorkel) is often included or available for a small rental fee. Scuba gear (BCD, Regs, Tank, Weights) is typically included in diving packages, but dive computers may be extra.
Shared tours are budget-friendly and social, following a fixed itinerary. Private tours offer flexibility to choose your own start time, spend longer at specific wrecks, and avoid the biggest crowds.
For a single dive, wait 12 hours. For multiple dives or multiple days of diving (which is common in Coron), safety standards recommend waiting at least 18-24 hours before boarding a plane.
